COUNTRY LIFE AND WAITROSE PUBLISH THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO ENGLAND'S COUNTIES

September 5, 2008

Country Life and Waitrose County Guide supplement Country Life – the quintessentially English magazine – is celebrating the best of Britain's counties with a special County Guide supplement in association with Waitrose, on sale today.

The County Guide will be published as a free 52-page perfect bound supplement which will be bagged along with Country Life.

This is the first time Country Life has published a supplement of this kind, which will include a guide to 40 of England's counties, dedicating a full page to each. Featuring facts, myths and titbits relating to each county, the guide will also highlight the music, pubs, wildlife, mottos, events and history unique to each county. The County Guide also includes several of Waitrose's Food Heroes as well as each county's best local produce.

As an introduction, the supplement will also include a pictorial celebration of England, with stunning photography of some of the countries most iconic spots, including Lake Windermere, Bibury's Arlington Row and Botany Bay.

The supplement will also feature a Waitrose advertorial, a list of Waitrose stores, and an introduction by editor Mark Hedges with comments from Mark Price – managing director of Waitrose – about his home county, Cheshire, and his mission to discover more about local producers and traditions.

Mark Hedges, editor of Country Life, says: “The Country Life County Guide is a celebration – and a revelation – of everything England does best. And given that food is such a big part of that, we're delighted to be working with Waitrose to recognise the country's local food heroes.”

The supplement coincides with the start of a regular contribution to Country Life by Mark Price on the subject of food seasonality.

Mark Price says: “Putting consumers back in touch with the UK seasons so they savour British produce when it's at its finest is something close to my heart. I'm really looking forward to sharing my passion for seasonal food with readers of Country Life."
